Brierley Hill 5 Monyhull 1

Back to reality for the 'hull!

In the absence of the usual match reporter, Mr Langston, Manager Millist is back with his review of Saturdays outing. And without the comedy gold, that usually flows from such a dire display, what follows is a somewhat frank analysis…
Bouyed by the 'hulls first win of the season, the division three cup provided the chance for the players to begin their search for cup glory away to Brierly Hill. Brierly were relegated from division two last season, so it was always going to be a big ask - despite the first few results of the season.

I don't think however, Monyhull could have prepared themselves for the next 90 minutes.
From the first whistle Monyhull were out the blocks and took control, keeping hold of the ball, probing, testing the Brierly resolve. This all changed on the ten minute mark when the first, of a fast becoming characteristic, individual error crept in. Jankowski, being closed down, passed the ball across the box and the Brierly striker raced in to tuck home. Minutes later, a ball over the top caught the defence flat footed and Pritchard out of position for the opposition winger to swoop in for number 2.

The rest of the first half saw little in the way of goal mouth action, any brief moments the 'hull had were finished with a panic induced pass to a dark blue shirt and as usual without the ball Monyhull seemed to be two passes behind their experienced cup opposition.
At half-time, the gauntlet was laid down that Monyhull could change this game, that it was not out of their reach, it was time to push on and start achieving something for themselves.

An uninspiring start to the second half saw a triple change, with the returning Conlon, along with Buckley and White on to replace, Shannon, Keys and Reeson. Could they turn it around?… No

In fact our hopeful strike form outside the area, saw Estridge grab at air as the ball bobbled in for a third.
It was left to the one shining light of the day, experienced striker Leigh Watts to restore some pride, Tom Hales played him in, and Watts cooly slotted home for 1-3. Boss, Millist, believed this was their chance to push on but a through ball from midfield saw a Brierly Hill player through and he finished to restore a three goal lead. A fifth was added to finish off any hope Monyhull had of a spectacular come back. A bad day at the office.

Manager Millist, was less then sympathetic, "I don't know what's happened this season, I feel like we've gone backwards! We made good progress last season and I thought we would push on. But if I'm totally honest, we've been poor. Not just today, but since the season begun. The plan was to play a settled team and people would have to push hard to make the match day squad, now I see no reason to keep playing the same players, its disappointing because on a Tuesday night, I play with these lads and they are world class. But at the moment they seem to have a problem with delivering on a match day."

And the boss is at a loss as to the problem, "I can't put my finger on the issue. We are not 13 year old boys, all chasing the same ball and need to be taught. We are grown ups who have played the game long enough, and yet we can't do the basics. Keeping hold of the ball, defending as a unit, tracking back, watching runs, passing to feet, making runs, if we don't know these things by now, then we never will."
"Once again I will have to totally rethink the team this saturday."

But not all is lost, "We can at least take heart from the fact that our attack certainly seems to have more teeth this season, Watts is certainly the kind of experience we've needed and he works the channels well, Hales has certainly added crossing to his game as well". Millist also added, "I think its these times that we need to just remember its not life and death, and while we realise that individually we have to improve, we are just lads playing footy together and enjoying the journey… Well we will start enjoying it, at some point!".

"But as the Bible says about what to when the Christian life is hard, we will 'just continue', because eventually it will be worth it."
